I've been lurking and reading all the comments concerning the purposes of this list and the events that triggered many legitimate emotional reactions to September 11.

I wonder if it might be more productive to analyze the language usage and sociohistorical underpinnings of the terms used and the concepts involved rather than debating the pros and cons of the actions contemplated by the powers that be.

In other words, unpacking the superordinate structures and their subtexts might be interesting as well as productive, especially because the xmca community is truly international. As Vygotsky emphasized that thought is born through words and the words are a direct expression of human consciousness. Sometimes we have to rethink new words to deal with new realities, such as "preemptive counterattack."

For what its worth,
Michael E.
