The Centre for Language and Communications in the School of Education
produces and supports a range of highly popular courses in English
language studies at undergraduate, masters and doctorate level. The
Centre also has a long history of contributing to the Continuing
Professional Development of teachers. This is an area which we hope to
expand, both within the UK and internationally.
The School of Education gained a 4 in the last RAE. The Centre for
Language and Communications has an excellent record of research
productivity and maintains a high national and international profile in
the field of language and communication studies. Current research
interests include classroom communication, computers and communication,
children's language use, language diversity, English as an international
language and academic literacy.
We are looking for a lecturer with a strong background in language and
literacy in education, an enthusiasm for distance teaching and a
commitment to teaching mature students. You should have good
communication and writing skills and an interest in the use of new
technologies to deliver courses through supported open learning. You
would be expected to contribute to the presentation and future
production of courses in several aspects of language and literacy, both
for teachers and other professional audiences and for students within
the OU's general undergraduate programme.

The post is available from 1 April 1999 or as soon as possible
thereafter. Appointment will be made on either the Lecturer A salary
scale (=A316,655 - =A321,815 p.a.) or on the Lecturer B salary scale
(=A322,726 - =A329,048 p.a.) according to qualifications and experience.
