Diane, I would like to recommend an article on sexuality and terminology
used in popular culture which I feel contextualizes these issues. It is
called "Raging Hormones and Powerful Cars: The Construction of Men's
Sexuality in School Sex Education and Popular Adolescent Films" by Mariamne
H. Whatley in a book edited by Giroux (SUNY Press 1991) entitled
Postmodernism, Feminism, and Cultural Politics. In the article she
deconstructs the films of John Hughes : Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of
Wonderful, Wierd Science, 16 Candles, Ferris Buehler's Day Off, Breakfast
Club, and looks critically at the youth language of the films. It is a
great article. I hope you get a chance to look at it. roberto
