The socialization function had nothing to do with normalization in any
direct sense. The presentation of this yardstick norm descriptive of how
no one thought, felt or lived allowed each real person to percieve his or
her reality not as generic humanity but as difference from this norm.
Imagine that you're a fish swimming along and this hook drops down. The
purpose of the hook is not to reel (real) you up out of your accustumed
waters but merely to show you a sign that reads "water". After you get
over being confused, if you do, you're still right where you are and right
who you are. But, you're a little bit more aware that you are only who you
are because you are where you are and have been since before you can
remmber. The really important part was the inoculation against ELVIS
provided by Ricky. Actually, ELVIS emerges as inforamtion only as a break
in the redundancy of Ricky. ELVIS is the REAL of a symbolic order which is
only a structure if Ricky goes without saying.
