This goes Waaay back to the language discussion of ten days ago (almos
another era in list life). Jus though I'd make a comment on Mike's comment:

I think this observation is right on target. I can't really address the
issue of "commonality between Spanish and French culture" in general but
there is a commonality in the sense that both "languages" have an Academy
(English doesn't) which regulatively norms usage. And no matter how much
speakers may criticize the academies, I think they play a decisive role
in the attitudes (very often prescriptive and restrictive) found, especially
among "learned" or "cultured" speakers about correct use of language. Rosa
