Dear Robin,

Hasan discusses this in "The disempowerment game: Language in Literacy" To
appear in _Literacy and Power_ edited by C D Baker, J Cook-Gumpertz and A
Luke Oxford: Basil Blackwell (in preparation 1996).

The paper is a lengthy and enlightening discussion of how Bourdieu's
understanding of language and literacy affects his understanding of the
potential of language in processes of socialisation. She extends her
theoretical critique of Bordieu to reflect on how these perceptions of
language are reflected in 'empowerment' literacy programs. By the way, she
references Hjelmslev's _Prolegomena- for the notion of the "invariant
behind the variant''.

She also says that she is not to be quoted in any publication, so I better
desist right now!

Robert
