Simply: a cline is a matter of degree, and contrasts with
a purely black-or-white category choice.

Interesting: in semantics, for English at least, matters of
evaluation are always clines; so are matters of social relationships
(intimacy, formality, respectfulness, etc.)

Wonder: what sorts of meanings go by degree and which do not,
and why ... JAY.
