Eva and Paul, thanks for your thoughts on this topic. There IS a
cost to learning (in both the social and the academic realms), which
we can acknowledge but never completely take away. Children DO grow
up in worlds structured by adults, and this gives us a tremendous
responsibility to reflect on our practices--and not only our
practices, but also the cultural roots of the goals we have
for our children.
