Jim-- I add my thanks to Francoise's for your explication of the Halliday
weather/climate analogy. When you then like climate to phylogenetic
constraints (the long term) I am STRONGLY reminded of the cutural-historical
view of mind/language as the interweaving of natural and cultural lines.
Probably not a coincidence, if my simplified interpretation seems plausible
