Re: [xmca] New Online XMCA

Ana, and others who have picked up on Etienne's mentioning of a wiki, I too would be interested in experimenting with what could become a 'CHAT wiki' to go along with the XMCA discussion list.

I am not so much thinking of starting out trying to create a CHAT **encyclopedia** with formal articles, although that is possible. I am thinking of a CHAT wiki, to start with, as a place to collect the many **links** and **attachments** we already share on xmca.

Here is an example of the sort of thing I have in mind. I just picked this example out at random:

On 10 Oct 2008, Dot Robbins wrote a post to xmca about Dmitri Uznadze.
http://communication.ucsd.edu/MCA/Mail/xmcamail.2008_10.dir/0071.html
In her post, Dot included a link to
http://www.ibe.unesco.org/publications/ThinkersPdf/uznadzee.pdf
which is a useful article about Uznadze by Georgy Ketchuashvili.

A CHAT wiki could have an entry for Uznadze, Dmitri (1986-1950), and these two links, one to an xmca post and discussion, the other to a .pdf file.

Generally speaking, we could put a link to any xmca post in the CHAT wiki, and any xmca post can have an internet link, and/or a .pdf or Word file attachment. A CHAT wiki could become a kind of index to these archives with all these links, attachments, etc. The xmca archive becomes a LIBRARY of links and attachments - not to mention many valuable posts - and the CHAT wiki becomes a kind of LIBRARY CATALOG.

Besides NAMES and TOPICS being entries, BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION itself could be listed as entries. LSV's Thinking and Speech alone could have a ton of links, as could many of the other classics of CHAT literature. I have even been going so far as to wonder if a CHAT wiki could not grow into becoming a powerful CHAT library CARD CATALOG with a specific entry for EVERY article, chapter, book, collection, etc. in the "CHAT literature." Well, a person can dream, can't they?

My main point here is that there is already a TON of information already in existence that could go in a CHAT wiki. And there are some very valuable things we could add - for example, how about a list of every CHAT-relevant article in MCA, JREEP, the old LCHC Newsletters? And that is just the beginning of valuable lists of CHAT literature we could create if we put our heads together, and a lot of information that already exists here and there.

GETTING existing or new information INTO a 'CHAT wiki', of course, would be the challenge!

I'd like to see xmca'ers try. I would certainly pitch in, perhaps in a big way - I am actually in serious need of a place to collect bibliographic, biographic and general information about CHAT. I know I am not alone. Perhaps this is something we could do collectively through a wiki? Would a CHAT wiki as an adjunct to the XMCA discussion list give us new possibilities?

It is not essential to go the full way to a Wiki, but if I can be given permissions on defined directories, I can just get on with it.

Hi everyone,
thanks for hanging in there. It turns out that I was using a
low-priority mailing method (which is why you all received your
passwords 1, 2, 3 or more hours after you asked for them). Now I am
using the high priority mailing method. I didn't pick up on this for
the simple reason that I was developing this software at night, as
opposed to during the day (and peak traffic hours).
we're thinking about incorporating a wiki into the message board (to
get to your question, Andy).
but it's unclear how many people would be interested in collaborating
on organizing links, information, entries, etc, on a wiki....

All--

Sorry for any glitches in the new "beta" version of XMCA. This is a follow through on work that we discussed over a year ago and it is a WORK IN PROGRESS which we are hoping some of you will help with. Your feedback has already been important. Ideally, some of you will want to be part of helping build a new collective intellectual tool for all those interested in
the
general themes of xmca. If so, just let Etienne know and cc me and Stefan
Tanaka, who is cc'ed on this note.

We did not succeed in raising the money we hope to from this, but with some small input of local funds and a lot of input from Etienne, this is a start.
The
future will depend a lot on you.

It must be the luck of the draw - I successfully completed the whole process in a couple of steps, including a fast password turnaround, and want
to thank Etienne and others for a great new resource.

Etienne had me try out these things last week. I had exactly the same problems as you with the passwords, Ana. Somehow after about the third
round of entering new passwords I got in.

I've contacted our internet service providers because the emails are sending at a very slow, slow rate. I'm receiving now messages that

Dear Etienne,

I have done what you said, but I have not received a temporary

went into my spam box also and it is not there either
So, maybe you need to send me a temporary password manually.

This seems very interesting indeed.

Thanks a lot

Dear XMCA Community,

for some time, LCHC has been working with local resources to enhance, as both a service and research project, the means by which the XMCA community can trace its own development and sustain its interactions. To that end, we have developed a new web site that, in addition to making accessible and searchable the entire XMCA archive, supports (or, with your feedback, will support) a variety of functions to help
develop new kinds of conversations and interactions.

Among the more immediate projects include developing a community bibliography, as well as file repository, which will be integrated into the XMCA archives and webboards themselves. We also help to support more ad hoc type interactions that emerge from searches, old posts, new threads, and various forms of tagging and sharing of information. So if you are interested in getting access (it's quick
and easy), visit:

http://xmca.lchc-resources.org/index.pl

If you have ever posted to XMCA, you already have an account, but you don't have a password. To get one, type into the email field (either for the login or for "reset password") the email you use to post to XMCA. You will receive in your mailbox a temporary password. Login
with this password. At the bottom of each page on
xmca.lchc-resources.org there is a "change password" link if you want
to update your password to something more familiar.

If have never posted to XMCA, then please email me for an account
until we have a more permanent registration system.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DEVELOP THIS. And this means more than your
ideas
and feedback; we're also looking for programmers. All of
http://xmca.lchc-resources.org is open source and managed by a
control
version system (so that many people can develop it at once). If you want to get your hands dirty, or have local resources that you think
could help, please let us know to coordinate.

best regards,

Etienne Pelaprat
