Eric,
Although "ecletic" has been seen as a pejorative or derogatory term I believe - like you, I guess - that Vygotsky was claimming something as a learning opening to different points of view, maybe a critical advantage of many/others streams of thinking. I don't know, now, what the word should be used to mean this... Surely, the paradigm he proposes is not an "ecletic" one but an approach to psyche that unifies biological and social-cultural features of mind in a coherent hole.

"(...) I am doing so in Vygotsky's eclectic general scientific paradigm (...) and was met with resistance by XMCA members (...)"
Eric

I understand that all/any resistance revels some "egocentrism" in the sense that one cannot, or best, do not want to take the Other's perspective to read/see the world, to understand an other way of thinking. Negotiation, dialogue, tolerance and some hand over by all parts seem the best way to fit a healthy living one another - married people know this very well.
