>***** CSCL'99 Invitation *****
>
>You are cordially invited to participate in and attend Computer Support for
>Collaborative Learning '99, to be held at the Stanford University, Stanford
>California USA on December 12-15, 1999. CSCL '99 is the third international
>conference devoted to the exploration of the roles for technology in
>collaborative forms of learning and teaching.
>Participation in this conference is invited from designers, educators,
>researchers, and students in a diverse set of disciplines including:
>education, cognitive and educational psychology, didactics, computer
>science, anthropology, sociology, speech communication, semiotics,
>technology design, linguistics, engineering, ergonomics, and subject matter
>specialties.
>
>***** Topics of Interest *****
>
>CSCL '99 topics include all tool designs, theoretical contributions, &
>empirical studies which advance support for collaborative learning.
>Suggested areas include:
>
>Designs for Tools
>* novel uses of email, discussions, listservs, chat rooms,
>videoconferencing for learning
>* innovations in applying the web, groupware, & hypermedia for
>collaborative learning
>* Multi-user virtual environments and virtual places (MUVEs, MOOs, MUDs)
>* agents & intelligent systems for CSCL
>* extending successful learning tools (microworlds, games, simulations) to
>promote collaboration
>* virtual realities and shared whiteboards for learning
>* GUI or architectural design principles for CSCL
>
>Theoretical perspectives
>* pedagogical theories (case-based, problem-based, design-based,
>project-based, etc) for CSCL
>* elaboration of foundational ideas (constructionism, scaffolding, inquiry,
>argumentation, shared knowledge)
>* building on core disciplines (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology,
>HCI,)
>* applying Activity Theory, Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition,
>Participatory Design in CSCL.
>* useful frameworks, guidelines, principles for design, research,
>implementation, evaluation
>
>Studies and Methods
>* discourse & video analysis of CSCL
>* cognition & conceptual change studies of CSCL
>* assessing student achievement, evaluating CSCL systems
>* qualitative analyses of CSCL (case studies, action research,
>participatory design, ethnography)
>* equity & gender issues in CSCL
>changes in affect, knowledge, identity with CSCL
>* CSCL in community and informal learning settings
>* best practices for CSCL design teams
>
>Thinking Outside the Box
>* self-improving CSCL communities (information filtering, recommender syste=
ms)
>* architectural learning spaces (cooperative buildings, smart walls)
>* handheld, mobile, or low-cost CSCL
>* partnering across sectors and organizations for CSCL
>* your idea which revolutionizes CSCL
>
>***** Student Paper Competition *****
>There will be a $1,000 cash prize for the best student paper submitted to
>CSCL '99. To participate, the first author (and presenter) for the paper
>must be enrolled as a student at the time of submission. A signed letter
>from the student's advisor should be included with the submission
>certifying that (1) the student was primarily responsible for the work
>described in the paper and (2) is in good standing at the university.
>Please include a phone number that can be used to verify the student's
>status at the university. Funding for this competition comes from author
>royalties on sales of T. Koschmann (Ed.) CSCL2: Theory and Practice of an
>Emerging Paradigm (Lawrence Erlbaum, 1996).
>
>***** Workshops *****
>
>CSCL Workshops
>
>Proposals are solicited for workshops to be held in conjunction with CSCL.
>Preference will be given to proposals for activities that can only be
>undertaken in a workshop format, rather than a mini-conference. For example=
,
>workshops might focus on in-depth analyses of sample data or exemplary
>designs; present alternate views on a particular issue that is of concern t=
o
>CSCL researchers and practitioners, and attempt to resolve the issue; or
>identify priorities for new directions of research and initiate the
>appropriate collaborations. Preference will also be given to proposals that
>include activities beyond the workshop itself, for example, new
>collaborations, repositories of data, software or other resources.
>
>***** Innovative Formats *****
>
>We are inviting submissions for interactive events that will highlight
>innovative and interesting aspects of computer-supported collaborative
>learning in a wide range of learning environments. Two main categories of
>interactive events are of interest.
>
>1. Innovative Interactive Demos:
>Experiential showcases that will allow conference attendees to participate
>in and experience interactive collaborations relating to any of the themes
>outlined in the conference call for papers. Examples are (but not limited
>to) the use of new interactive devices, interactive environmental designs,
>and collaborative events to facilitate face-to-face interactions as well as
>long distance communications. We especially encourage demos that make use
>of advanced technologies such Internet2, interactive toys and play
>environments, micro devices and hand held computers with wireless
>interactivity.
>
>2. Interactive Poster Sessions:
>
>Thematically organized poster sessions in which conference presenters and
>attendees will have an opportunity to interact and discuss issues
>person-to-person. For posters, we are interested in empirically-based
>studies of collaborative designs and tools.
