Re: [xmca] The Non-modular Mind

Sorry about that, Mike. I get carried away sometimes. I do have some real questions about this Shore's book though.
I guess Shore really wants to bring back the "Totem" problem banished by Levi-Strauss. He basically thinks that Levy-Bruhl was right about participation, and that "totems" are a relic of "prelogical" thinking. 
Ergo, he rejects Vygotsky's explanation, which is that participation is completely logical, but the logic is preconceptual (viz. complexive), and in fact it's what most of us do most of the time. 
Incredibly, he says that "(f)or Vygotskians, thinking is understood to be a form of 'inner speech' derived from a conversational environment (Vygotsky, 1962)" Hmm...guess he skipped Chapter Four and Chapter Seven, and most of what was in between!
Nobody much seems to notice that animal totemtry is almost entirely restricted, with all due deference to the Loyal Order of Moose, to hunter-gatherer societies. In agricultural societies (e.g. Renaissance Europe) tribes and castes are defined by ties to the land, and in bourgeois societies (e.g. the USA) by occupation.
So instead of an elaborate, formalistic set of categories for pre-Linnaean classification, totemism is really a model of the division of labor; a pre-scientific understanding of class. 
But my other question is this--why doesn't Shore refer to YOUR work, Mike? You could at least set him straight on Vygotsky!
