as i sat outside the pokemon league one evening, a few minutes early to
pick up my son, i overheard a conversation between three older boys, one
of whom was 18. i know this because he was complaining about people
pressuring him to buy cigarettes for them, and he was smoking.
they discussed the pokemon game going on inside the building and one of
them said that if it didn't have such a dumb name, he would be in there
right now playing it. one of the other boys agreed that the game was fun
to play, but that americans didn't know how to name things, that the
japanese had better names for games like that.
the two 17-yr. olds that live in my house (one mine, one rescued) both
play the game boy game and will play the card game with my younger sons,
but it's not cool to do that in public. but these two boys are perhaps
inordinately concerned with appearing cool.
i have seen boys and girls of all ages playing at this local pokemon
league. one boy i know drives himself and his younger brother. one man i
observed did not appear to be with a son or daughter and he was playing
and discussing the cards with enthusiasm. i do think there are parents out
there who play the game with their kids and actively support because they
think it's fun for themselves. these may be parents who grew up playing
D&D or electronic RPGs.
