Rubric for Documenting Undergraduate (UG) Assistance to Children on Writing Tasks
Extent of Assistance
- No or very minimal help
- A little help
- A lot of help
Nature of Assistance

Help with spelling
- Help with punctuation and/or grammar
- Help with choice of specific words
- Help about what to write about (topic)
- Help by prompting or accessing prior knowledge
- Help by typing while child dictates text (Child > UG)
- Help with translating words/ideas
- Help with reading (especially Maga’s responses)
- Help of some other sort. Explain ___________________
The undergraduate (UG) is required to write two scores at the bottom of the child’s text as follows:
(UG’s initials) /I, II, or III/ 1-9
So a typical entry would look like the following:
KG/ III/ 1, 4, 6, 7
Note that there are often multiple forms of assistance and
all should be recorded with a comma between each one.
