Course Goals:
- Since the department’s course is for all
service learning activities offered through the
department, this mini-course explores sociocultural
theoretical underpinnings of the Fifth Dimension
model and theories of self-regulated learning and
motivation
- Explores relationship between theories and strategies
for promoting optimal literacy learning and child
development through collaborative learning and
play
Fieldwork:
- Undergraduates mentoring and interacting with
children
- Observation of children’s experiences in
the program and preparation of field notes
- Keep a journal of their participation in the
after school site that links their assigned readings
to their participation and to specific tasks
Evaluation Strategies:
- Pre- and post-tests of undergraduate knowledge
of course content
- Examination of undergraduate field notes to measure
understanding of theory and practice related to
course content
- Survey of undergraduate interest in pursuing
graduate or professional school studies
- Assess undergraduates perceptions of the value
of participating at the site
