Course:  Education 140C: Literacy: Individual and Societal Development

Participants (based on 2004-05 data):

  • Approximately 70 undergraduates per academic year, and approximately 3-4 graduate students per academic year

Course Description:

  • Introduce students to theory, policy, and teaching practices related to literacy and language learning and development; explore how race and ethnicity intersect with the acquisition and uses of literacy
  • Fulfills UC Berkeley’s American cultures requirement; also an elective for the undergraduate education minor, and

Fieldwork:

  • Write up weekly field notes and connect their observations to class readings

Evaluation Strategies:

  • Pre- and post-test of undergraduate knowledge of course content
  • Examination of undergraduate field notes to measure understanding of theory and practice related to course content
  • Survey of undergraduate interest in pursuing graduate or professional school studies
