Dear Colleagues --
It took me a while to get the scanning done, but attached is a file with
part of a chapter on the Czech concept of "litost" from Milan Kundera's *Book
of Laughter and Forgetting.
*I take this to be a description of a highly, culturally, imbricated
emotion of the sort that Manfred and colleagues have been referring to.
I hope it is thought provoking. Is it the sort of phenomenon under
discussion, Manfred?
