Lois - you asked, all in caps:
> you and Fred have hopes and dreams for equity and sorority, amongst over values. (which i too support.)
>
> but for such dreams to succeed it's going to take more than changes in systems of practice. WHAT MORE IS THERE THERE THAN CHANGES IN SYSTEMS OF PRACTICE?
what i meant about there having to be more than changes in systems of practice is that we need to recognize that all systems will have inherent practices of repression - which i think is a reflection of the affective structure of being a human being.
also, i'm not sure that democratic participation resolves the practice of repression within human activities.
your response to my query as to whether or not i was making sense was:
WELL, YES AND NO (TO ME AT LEAST). YES, WITHIN A TOOL FOR RESULT, INSTRUMENTAL AND/OR IDEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK AND PRACTICE. BUT A TOOL-AND-RESULT, REBUILDING THE SHIP WHILE IT'S SAILING METHODOLOGY HAS THE POSSIBILITY, AT LEAST, FOR RADICALLY DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION (INCLUDING RADICALLY DEMOCRATIC DECIDING WHAT THAT PRACTICE IS). AND FOR BEING MORE LIKE HOW I THINK WE ACTUALLY FUNCTION IN THE WORLD, FOR HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO KNOW WHAT WE DO AND NOT KNOW WHAT WE DO DOES? HERE I DON'T AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT FROM FOUCAULT YOU QUOTE. HOW ARE THEY SEPARATE? OF COURSE, MODERNISM SOLIDIFIED THEIR AHISTORICAL SEPARATION BUT THIS, I BELIEVE, IS DISTORTIVE OF THE ACTUAL LIFE PROCESS.
THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE. THANKS AGAIN. (DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?)
my response here is that i'm going to need some time pondering "tool for result" and "tool-and-result" - i have glimmerings of what you may mean, but i'm going to search about for examples found in my experiences.
thank you -
phillip
