Research Associate

Seeking an experienced researcher to collaborate on and coordinate a 4-year
longitudinal research project based at Oregon State University, Corvallis,
OR. The research is being conducted in a highly ethnically and
socio-economically diverse Portland, OR neighborhood. The research design
includes tracking 10-year-old youth over a 4-year period in order to
understand how they become interested in and engaged with (or not) science
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), both in school and out of
school. Community partners include the youth themselves, their parents,
siblings and friends; Parkrose Public Schools, neighborhood parochial and
private schools, home educating families in the neighborhood, Multnomah
County Public Libraries, Metro Parks, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
(OMSI), Oregon Zoo, major after-school providers as well as other
community-based groups and organizations. The research will be highly
participatory and also involve high school youth serving as community
ethnographers. In addition to these aspects of the investigation, the
project will be building a complex computer model in order to map the STEM
learning resources and their use by youth in order to better understand and
represent multiple dimensions of interest development and their causative
factors. In Years 3 & 4 there will be opportunities to experiment with the
system through targeted interventions by both institutions and families.
 These interventions will be designed to both facilitate greater interest
and engagement by youth as well as directly test the efficacy of our model.

Position is non-tenure track but opportunities for both teaching and
advising exist. Person would be part of the STEM research/free-choice
learning group at OSU but could opt to live in either Corvallis or Portland.

Ideal expertise/experience for the candidate would include:

§ Expertise/experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative
social science research;

§       Expertise/experience in managing complex projects;

§ Experiences with community-based research projects involving diverse
stakeholders, e.g., university researchers, graduate students and community
members and organizations;

§ Expertise/experience working with youth and families of diverse
backgrounds (racial-ethnically and socioeconomically);

§ Experience working with technology, both as a data collection and as
a community education tool.

§       Excellent organizational and communication skills;

§ Special attention given to applicants with an
understanding/experience in free-choice learning and out-of-school science
education, complex modeling, ability to speak more than one language,
community engagement and/or specific experience/expertise engaging youth in
participatory research.

Individual must possess a Ph.D. degree in a relevant subject area and at
least 3 years of project management experience.
