A good tip for the right persons.

Maybe you have a student who would be interested? They're looking for
freshly minted BAs or even someone taking a year off school...

DESCRIPTION

Yspaniola, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2009, empowers
marginalized batey communities of Dominicans and Haitians in the Dominican
Republic. Through university scholarships, leadership training and community
development, we provide resources for individuals and bateys to access local
networks and rise out of poverty. Simultaneously, we support research to
understand the underlying causes of poverty and potential ways to diminish
inequality in the Dominican Republic.

>From June 2011 to June 2012, Yspaniola is looking for two researchers,
ideally recent college graduates or undergraduates taking a year off from
course work, who will work together to do a comprehensive educational
quality and access study in one or more rural Dominican communities.
Researchers will spend the Summer studying the history of Hispaniola, batey
communities, and international development, while preparing for their time
in the Dominican Republic. They will spend the rest of the year designing
and carrying out their research in batey communities near Santiago,
Dominican Republic.

Interested candidates should send one PDF document including a cover letter,
resume, unofficial transcript, two writing samples and two letters of
recommendation – one by a peer and one by a professor or employer – to
research@yspaniola.org by April 18th with "Research Position" and the name
of the candidate in the Subject line. Proficiency in Spanish is required;
working knowledge of Haitian Creole a plus. Competitive applicants will be
interviewed. Please familiarize yourself with our programs at
www.yspaniola.org before applying. Candidates are encouraged to apply
individually and do not need to apply as a team of two, though such tandem
applications will be considered. Yspaniola will provide a modest stipend,
but candidates are encouraged to apply for outside grants and fellowships to
support their time in the Dominican Republic.
