Carol, I remember about 2004, after I had been on xmca for about 5 years, remarking as an aside "as an outsider ..." and of course this remark was met with a little incredulity by my interlocutors. I think it is something we southern hemisphereans feel, and especially if we are in the wrong time zone or language community, that we are on the outside, even though this may not really be the case. I know for a fact that there are a lot of lurkers out there who have gallons to say, but hesitate for a long time to speak up, because of this feeling of not being in the know. I guess it is a great virtue of this list that we are all into much the same thing and often go quite deeply into our topic which is interesting for those lurking. But on the other hand, I guess it can be a bit intimidating as well. But every one of us knows only a small slice of the pie, both the reading pie and the discussion pie. Not to mention how totally insanely busy is academic life today. No-one seems to have a moment. With the 24/7 teaching week now firmly in place life is very smart but also very exhausting.

By scanning the brains of children ages 6 to 11 as they listened to
children's stories, researchers have for the first time investigated
brain regions associated with social cognition in human children.
Researchers found that one of the brain regions, the right
tempero-parietal junction, appeared to change its function between the
ages of 6 and 11. This research has implications for the study of
atypical social development, as happens in autism.
