Dear Peter and Mike
My point is:
Nowadays, “literacy” is a polissemic word that is used as a solution for
multiple problems: some propose an environmental literacy to solve
environmental problems, other people recommend a technological literacy to
technological uses, a civic and political literacy to civic and political
disruptions or multiple literacies to answer the "challenge" of educational
problems, and so on. Those “subliteracies” are very frequently interpreted
as a mastery of instrumental and technical tools.
Perhaps, the central issue here is that we may find some answers to those
"subliteracies" if our focus is on social and human development. And if we
choose this second approach, in a vygotskian perspective, pershaps we
may use the construct "transliteracy" that, as Mike asks, “indicates
flexibility experties in production and reception across specific media in a
way that multiple does not” and also indicates social practices in specific
historical-cultural contexts.
In this sense, the working definition of transliteracy, posted in the
website, may be not so “developmental” as I would propose, but this
construct may be an interesting theoretical way to answer the environmental
literacy + technological literacy + political literacy + civic literacy, in
a historical-cultural perspective or multiple literacies. What do you think?
