thank you for responding to my post and my personal description/interpretation of a particular social act and what I was reading into the activity.
The tension you address is also one I share. Mike's comment that it's a complex process is one I support All the research and findings of "cognitive" changes I believe are valid but not sufficient. My role as a "counsellor" in school settings requires me to straddle the tension of schools as places of "cognitive" learning and interactional social spaces. Your description of the tension within departments of education also speak to these tensions.
The article Peter just posted I believe is trying to engage and BRIDGE both sides of the divide.
Anna Sfard's research on math teaching I find compelling because she explicitly brings in the dialectical tension of teacher/learner and until a student is willing to be in the learner "position" (Meadian theory) then learning is resisted. I want to suggest that all the research on cognition is a valid and necessary activity but we must bring into these accounts the socioaffective climate in which learning takes place.
That is why I mention Takeo Doi's work critiquing Western preoccupation on independence as not recognizing our need for dependent relationship dynamics and the moving out and moving in patterns of exploration when our dependency needs are met.
"dependency" as a positive factor in development is hardly ever addressed in sociocultural narratives and the literature on "recognition" is almost always about "interdependency" and "independence" and equality between actors.
I am not suggesting I have any notion about what is primary and what secondary but our notions of "rationality" and my discusiions of "reflecting" are not synonymous.
Self-reflection from a Meadian perspective is about changing positions within the social act which leads to "recognition" of self-in-other and other-in-self.
The reason I'm interested in RELATIONAL psychoanalysis is because they seem to the most engaged in elaborating the self-reflection of the therapist/teacher position in the social act.
In the article on the PLAYWORLD the CENTRALITY of the teacher's willingness to STRUGGLE with the tensions and entertain the children's voices in a true DIALOGUE that CHANGED the teacher allowed the institutional frame ventriloquated through the teacher to be transformed into a new set of RULES which were NOVEL and released vitality as the teacher RECOGNIZED the AGENCY of the children. It was not that the children HAD agency which was RELEASED (but already in potential). It was the social act in which the TEACHER STRUGGLED to HEAR the children's voices and the children being active agentic participants within the NOVEL institutional frame CREATED MOSTLY BY THE TEACHER who has the POWER to create the frame that released the E-MOTION and MOVEMENT.
When are these movements developmental? I would suggest when the struggle leads to self-reflection (which includes increasing rationality but also increasing e-motion and increasing DIALOGUE (intra, inter, and in the VOCAL GESTURE (Mead) in which the dialogue is heard BOTH internally and externally.) Gillespie points out these all have a common root in the SOCIAL ACT but the specific movements are differentiated in Gillespie's theory (see BECOMING OTHER)
I want to recommend we put in play the article Peter just posted because all the themes I've just written about are embedded in this article's framing of the ZPD. It is this article's standpoint I believe I was intuitively addressing in my opening remarks on the playworld.
This is very quick stream of consciousness thinking out loud, dialogical, and vocal gesture (as I listen to myself while writing this post) and identity formation and SELF reflection as I learn to lightly dance BETWEEN these various tensions and elaborate a more COMPLEX INTEGRATED (not only rational) perspective.
