HSFP Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) Program *URL for more info*
http://www.hfsp.org/news/news.php?id=74 *Sponsor* Human Frontier Science
Program (HFSP) Organization
*Sponsor Type* Other Nonprofit *Upper Amount* $147,900 *Amount Note* The
HFSP fellowship programs provide three years of postdoctoral support. The
amount of the support varies depending on the host country. As an example,
for fellows going to the USA the fellowship provides a living allowance of
US $39,900. Felowships also provide a family allowance and child allowance,
if relevant. Moreover, fellows receive a research and travel allowance and
are eligible for support for language training in their first year. The HFSP
also provides a relocation allowance for those who move to the host
laboratory within three months of starting their fellowship and for the
return to the home country. The third (final) year of funding can either be
used to return to the home country, and under those circumstances can be
deferred for up to two years, or can be used for a third year in the host
laboratory. more ... <http://fundingopps.cos.com/alerts/1793#> *Deadline* Aug
27, 2010
*Deadline Note* *Anticipated deadline. A deadline for the next cycle has
not been confirmed. The record will be updated when new program information
becomes available.*

August 27, 2009, is the deadline for pre-registration (for obtaining a
password)and for initializing an application. The submission deadline for
Long-Term Fellowships is September 10, 2009. more

 *Requirements* Ph.D./M.D./Other Professional
*Abstracts* LTFs are intended for postdoctoral fellows with a Ph.D. degree
and prior research training/experience in the life sciences. Applicants are
expected to move into a new research field within the life sciences or into
a different discipline while ivestigating a fundamental biological process.
Appropriate changes of research direction include, but are not limited to,
e.g., a change from molecular genetics to crystallography, from cellular
neurobiology to cognitive brain functions.

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) supports basic research focused on
elucidating the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Emphasis is placed
on novel, innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to basic research that
involve scientific exchanges across national boundaries. In particular, HFSP
encourages research into biological problems involving approaches and
knowledge from different disciplines such as chemistry, physics,
mathematics, computer science, engineering, and material sciences because
significant new ideas, techniques, and discoveries often arise at the
boundaries between disciplines.

In addition to its international, and especially intercontinental,
character, the HFSP places emphasis on supporting researchers who are early
in their careers and who are expected to play an important role in
generating and pursuing original research.

The scope of HFSP funding ranges from biological functions at the molecular
and cellular level up to biological systems including cognitive functions.
Within this broad area, all levels of analysis are supported, from studies
on genes and individual molecules, intracellular networks, intercellular
associations in tissues and organs, to networks underlying complex functions
of entire organisms. However, projects that involve only large-scale,
systematic genome mapping, proteomics analyses, or applied research (e.g.,
clinical) are not eligible to receive HFSP funding. The HFSP does not
support projects aimed specifically at developing methods of treatment and
diagnosis. Studies related to disease are only considered if they allow new
insights into fundamental biological mechanisms. Proposals directly
concerned with agricultural or environmental problems (crop yield,
bioremediation) or studies at the population or ecosystem level are not
supported.

The LTF program provides fellows with the opportunity to utilize their final
(third) year of postdoctoral support in the home country. Fellows who choose
to return to their home country may defer their final year for up to two
years while they are funded in the host laboratory through other sources. more
... <http://fundingopps.cos.com/alerts/1793#> *Eligibility* A candidate
from one of the supporting countries may apply for an HFSP postdoctoral
fellowship to work in a research institution in any other country. A
candidate from any other country may apply to work in a research institution
in any of the spporting countries. Current member countries include
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus (EU part only), the
Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
India, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia,
Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United
Kingdom, and United States of America.

Long-Term Fellowships are intended for applicants with a Ph.D. degree in the
life sciences who are expected to broaden their horizon by moving into a new
research area that is different from their doctoral studies or previous
postdoctoral training. Applicants that propose a significant departure from
their previous research are viewed favourably.

Applicants may submit an application before receiving their Ph.D. degree.
However, at the start of the fellowship, applicants must have a research
doctorate (Ph.D.) or a doctoral-level degree comparable to a Ph.D. (e.g., a
research based M.D. or medical Ph.D.) with equivalent experience in basic
experimental research. In order to be eligible, the doctoral degree must
have been awarded on or after September 1, 2006, and at the latest in
December 2010. Exceptions are possible.

Applicants must have at least one first author or joint first author paper
either accepted for publication, in press, or published in a peer-reviewed
international journal as of the submission deadline.

Only one candidate may apply to work with a given host supervisor in each
award year. more ... <http://fundingopps.cos.com/alerts/1793#> *COS
