Re: [xmca] Do You Know?

D'après mon épouse, qui connait bien Gita, Z.S. Vigodskaya est bien la sœur de LSV, et elle était de profession linguiste. Mais nous ne pouvons établir aucun lien avec l'œuvre de son frère.

Thanks, Peter. So it's a transliteration problem. Faulty transliteration (the other way) also explains why the French translation of Vygotsky's work has a footnote about "A.P. Luria".
"J" is missing in a lot of languages, including Korean, because it's really a calque of two consonants, /dzh/. So Russian speakers assimilate the /zh/ to the /d/. In Korean, it's the other way around: we assimilate /dzh/ with /z/ and tend to confuse Zeus and juice and zoos and Jews. David Kellogg Seoul National University of Edzoocation

David,

Because there's no J in Russian! Д. Уотсон = Дж. Уотсон

In Section 4 and Section 5 of Thinking and Speech in Russian (and also
in the INDEX of the Collected Works) the behaviorist who is obviously
J.B. Watson is referred to as D. Watson. (Д. Уотсон). Does anybody know
why?

While I was finding out about this and other questions I noticed that my
Russian-English Dictionary (Dutton 1959, edited by A.I. Smirnitsky) was
compiled by somebody called Z.S. Vigodskaya. Any relation?
