The Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education invites
applications for the position of Department Head.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education offers
undergraduate (B.S.Ed.) and graduate (M.A., M.Ed., M.A.T., Ed.S., & Ph.D)
degree programs to prepare students to provide prevention, evaluation and
intervention services for clients from birth to adult with speech, language,
voice, resonance, swallowing or hearing disorders (Communication Sciences)
and to prepare special education teachers to have advanced competencies in
the areas of assessment, positive behavioral supports and specialized
instructional methods (Special Education). Competency in these areas is
obtained through didactic, web-based, and field experiences. The Department
of Communication Sciences and Special Education faculty rank among the
nation's most productive researchers in their fields. Graduate programs in
special education are ranked among the Top 25 in the nation. The Department
has over 25 full-time faculty members and services over 150 undergraduate
and over 175 graduate students. The Department faculty members are
nationally recognized in their areas of expertise with research interests
including, but not limited to: assistive technologies for students with
disabilities, instruction for students with learning disabilities,
evidence-based strategy instruction, stuttering, critical thinking skills
for helping professionals, bilingualism, auditory electrophysiology, early
childhood special education, autism spectrum disorders, single-subject
design, applied behavior analysis, mental retardation, assessing
adolescent/adult populations with learning disabilities, infant
vocalizations, language development in Down syndrome, recovery process in
individuals with aphasia, and collaboration among professionals and families
with young children with disabilities.

 

Qualifications:
This leadership position requires an earned doctorate, significant
experience at the college or university level, a nationally recognized
research program, graduate teaching and advising experience, record of
support for diversity, strong communication skills, demonstrated commitment
to high quality teacher education, and a strong record of external funding.
The position also requires a record of leadership and management skills,
faculty mentoring skills, and experience in program development.
 

Responsibilities:
The department head is responsible for providing leadership in building
vision within the department as well as furthering the department's national
and international recognition. The head is expected to enhance the
department's capacity to continue its emphasis on research and secure
external funding, manage fiscal and personnel resources, increase credit
hour production, and guide the department in meeting needs of special
education teachers in the State of Georgia. The term of appointment for this
position is three years.
