Well done Andy, I haven't heard the word homunculus for years!

Let me try an approach that I have been pondering for a bit.  Consider a
person's vision and the brains ability to fill in the blanks when one is
viewing the world.  Numerous experiments have pointed out that when reading
a script that provides the key words but omits the frivolous conjunctions,
articles etc.  the human brain doesn't need them to make sense of the text.
The same is in viewing a scene such as a flag pole behind a building, a
person does not think, "hmmm strange that that flag is floating in the
air."  My point is that people tend to do the same thing with word
definitions, they fill in the blanks with their own understanding.  I
believe Vygotsky's point was that as a person develops higher psychological
functions they become more sophisticated in their use of word meanings.
String can be just string but to a physicist it is also a theory.  But just
because a person has developed higher psychological functions that does not
mean they move to that method of functioning in the world 24-7.  Am I
creating sense with my words and allowing an understanding of what Vygotsky
was pointing towards with word meaning, or word sense, being THE unit of
analysis?

Your comments about the limitations of the commonsense idea
of my navigational ability amounting to an image of the
world inside my body are valid enough, but I think that if
you push this position to its extreme you end up in just as
much nonsense as someone who still believes in the
homunculus. An organism adapts to its environment, by
changing that environment, yes, but also by changing
themselves.

PS, Yes cultural-historical philosophy (if I could call it
that) begins with the critique of Kant, but I understand
from Ilyenkov, that Kant was responding to Hume ...
