Multi-Literacies for Multi-Competent Children: Experiences in Canadian English-medium Classrooms
The keynote talk will present examples of the multimodal (including video, computer podcasting, CD recordings) and multilingual (L1 and English) activities of groups of English language learners in Canadian classrooms. Kelleen will discuss the potential of these activities to contribute to children's increasing proficiency in print literacy as well as the intrinsic worth of these activities as 21st century meaning-making representations.
Kelleen Toohey is Professor in the Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC. Her current research with teachers and children learning English in diverse settings, focuses on the children's development of literacies in a variety of modes. Researchers and teachers have involved children in video and podcast planning, production, editing and presenting; children have also produced bilingual storybooks for younger students. The effects of these activities on children's literacy development is a central interest of the work. Long interested in language education for minority students, she has published in Language and Education, TESOL Quarterly, and other top journals of applied linguistics. With Bonny Norton in 2004, she edited Critical pedagogies and language learning (Cambridge University Press).
