*Editorial Transition at Child Development*

July 1, 2007 marked the date when the new Incoming Editor and Associate
Editors assumed the helm at *Child Development*. Incoming Associate Editors
Margaret Burchinal, John Colombo, Michael Cunningham, Mary Dozier, Andrew
Fuligni, Mary Gauvain, Roberta Golinkoff, Nancy G. Guerra, D. Geoffrey Hall,
Betsy Hoza, Melanie Killen, Louis J. Moses and Cynthia Stifter, and I now
have the privilege of processing new submissions to the journal. (Current *
CD* Editor Lynn Liben and her editorial team are continuing to handle
revisions of papers that were initially processed by them.)

Are there any changes in store for *Child Development*? That is the question
that I have received most often since being named Incoming Editor of the
journal. *Child Development* will of course continue to publish the best and
most forward-looking research in the developmental sciences. But look for an
addition to our existing paper formats: *Empirical articles, Reviews,
Essays, Child Development and..., From another perspective. *The new format is
entitled *Empirical reports*. This format will feature shorter cutting-edge
empirical papers that are no longer than 4000 words in length (including
text, tables, footnotes, appendices, but excluding abstract and references),
which advance research and knowledge in an area through noteworthy findings
and/or new methods. For manuscripts that require longer descriptions of
methods and results, authors should use the Empirical Article format, which
will continue to serve as the main vehicle of publication for papers that
appear in *CD*. (Please note that manuscripts that have been rejected at *CD
* in one of the empirical formats cannot be resubmitted to *CD* in the other
empirical format.) Some other changes are in store for *CD* as well. Look
for these changes when the first issue under our editorship appears in
January, 2009.

The Incoming Associate Editors and I have already begun discussing a number
of special initiatives for the journal including ideas for Special Sections
and Issues. Some special sections are already underway. Kevin Pelphrey and
Rebecca Saxe will be co-editing a special section on Developmental Social
Cognitive Neuroscience. Nathan Fox and Sir Michael Rutter will be co-editing
a special section on the Effects of Early Experience on
Cognitive/Socioemotional Development. Calls for contributions to these and
future special sections have been posted on the *CD* website and will appear
in upcoming issues of *SRCD Monthly E-news*, which is sent electronically to
all SRCD members. Contributions to Special Sections and Issues are welcome
from all investigators.

Finally, I would like to remind all readers of *Child Development* that we
welcome your participation as a reviewer for the journal. We are proud of
the constructive feedback that authors receive from our reviewers and invite
you to contribute to the process. Professionals from all disciplines in the
developmental sciences are encouraged to become involved. If you have not

Because the goal of the journal is to provide accessible articles that are
easily assimilated, articles will be short and, when accepted, will undergo
copyediting procedures designed to enhance the degree to which articles
communicate to individuals who are not specialists on the targeted topic.
Most manuscripts, including author-initiated ones, should be a maximum of
3000 words, * not *including the cover page, abstract, tables, figures, or
references. Although there is no set limit on references, they should not be
excessive. On occasion, somewhat longer papers will be invited for
submission, with the goal of obtaining short accompanying commentaries.
Invited commentary typically will be approximately 1000 words. Commentaries
are expected to be stimulating, informative, and to be constructive in their

* CDP* 's mission is to provide accessible, synthetic reports that summarize
emerging trends or conclusions within various domains of developmental
research and to encourage multidisciplinary and international dialogue on a
variety of topics in the developmental sciences.

The journal is designed to serve multiple audiences. The main audience is
expected to be SRCD members and other developmental scientists who try to
stay abreast of our field's progress in areas outside their specialties. A
second anticipated audience is consumers of research, including
policymakers, instructors, and professionals who work with children in
clinical or intervention settings who need access to succinct and accessible
scientific summaries of developmental research. In recognition of the
multidisciplinary and international scope of SRCD, contributors from a
variety of disciplines and countries will be included. In addition, our goal
is to include articles reflecting SRCD's commitment to cultural and
contextual diversity and application of science to policy.

Articles in the journal will include reviews, commentary, policy- or
research-related essays, and groups of papers on a targeted issue.
Manuscripts presenting new empirical data are not appropriate for this
journal (although a line of published research can be reviewed). Potential
contributors who have ideas about a set of three or four papers written from
very different perspectives (e.g., a set of papers on a topic that includes
authors from different disciplines and countries) may contact the editor
with their ideas for feedback. All manuscripts will undergo a review
process, although this process may be more abbreviated for some types of
submissions (e.g., commentary) than others (e.g., author-initiated
submissions).

* Monographs* publishes major reports of developmental research that
generates authoritative new findings and uses these to foster a fresh
perspective on, or integration of, conceptually significant issues.
Manuscripts reporting interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary research on

diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, national, or other contexts are of

*JRA Call for Submissions*

We invite submissions to the Journal of Research on Adolescence * (JRA)*.
The * JRA *presents empirical and theoretical papers focused on development
during adolescence and early adulthood. Studies are featured that use
diverse methods including multivariate, longitudinal, demographic, clinical,
ethnographic, and experimental analyses. Cross-national, cross-cultural,
and studies of gender, ethnic, and racial diversity are of particular
interest. We are committed to expanding the presence of qualitative and
multi-method research reports, practice-based, policy-oriented research
evaluations and reports, and studies related to biological processes. We are
now accepting three new paper formats: (a) Brief reports (no more than 12-15
manuscript pages including all references, tables and figures). These
reports should be modeled after research reports in journals like
*Science*and should focus on the methods and results. Such reports are
particularly
appropriate for basic descriptive studies that extend prior work to new
populations. This format is also appropriate for cross sectional,
correlational studies that test well defined theoretical models. (b)
Comprehensive reports of longitudinal studies which can be up to 80-90
manuscript pages. (c) Theoretical papers and comprehensive reviews of the
literature similar to papers published in *Psychological Review* and
*Psychological
Bulletin. *

Call for Submissions to the International Journal of Behavioral Development

Scholars are invited to submit papers to a new recurring section of
the *International
Journal of Behavioral Development* devoted to advances in developmental
methodology. The Methods and Measures section of the journal will feature
articles on issues related to instrumentation, design, and statistical
analysis in research on human development. Some papers will be brief primers
on cutting edge developmental methodologies. Others will be archival
descriptions of procedures and instruments. Still others will be empirical
studies that illustrate unique advances in statistics or measurement.
Primers on new techniques and procedures are welcome. Manuscripts should be
written for an audience of developmental scholars. Submissions must be
brief, ranging in length from 15 to 25 manuscript pages, inclusive. Submit

2008-2009 William T. Grant Scholars Program Brochure.*
The Scholars Program funds promising early-career researchers from diverse
disciplines. It supports the professional development of early-career

and who are seeking to further develop their skills and research. Studies

*Fragile Families Summer Data Workshop 2008
*June 30 - July 2, 2008
Columbia University School of Social Work

The Columbia University Population Center is currently accepting
applications for the Fragile Families Summer Data Workshop. The workshop is
designed to familiarize participants with the data available in the Fragile
Families and Child Wellbeing Study, especially the 5 year follow-up data
which will become publicly available in summer 2008. The national study
follows a birth cohort of (mostly) unmarried parents and their children,
providing information about the capabilities, circumstances, and
relationships of unwed parents, the wellbeing of their children, and the
role of public policy in family formation and parent and child wellbeing.

The workshop is targeted toward young scholars from various social science
disciplines, including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and
junior faculty. Applicants must possess basic quantitative data analysis
skills. Ethnic minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. About 25-30
applicants will be selected. Travel costs for out-of-town participants will
be reimbursed up to $750.00. (Rooms will be available at $95 and $190 per
night).

*Cognitive Development, Mechanisms and Constraints
July 3-5, 2008

The *Archives Jean Piaget *organize July 3-5, 2008 their*18th Advanced
Course*. The aim of this biannualconference is to group the best specialists
of a domain around a topic that has a particular relevance for Jean Piaget's
theory and developmental psychology. One of the most important aspects of
Piaget's legacy in the domain of developmental psychology has probably been
the theories known as the "neo-piagetian" theories. Among the new proposals
and ideas these theories put forward, the idea that cognitive development is
underpinned by some increase in cognitive resources, mental power or
attentional capacity is of particular relevance when considering the
importance of the concept of *cognitivere sources *and *working memory
*capacity
in the contemporary psychology. Thus, the next Advanced Course is
entitled *Cognitive
development, mechanisms and constraints*. Its objective is to gather
prominent theorists in the field of cognitive development within a
neo-piagetian perspective with specialists of the development of working
memory, attention and executive functions.

The Advanced Course is open to any scholar, researcher or student interested
in cognitive development, working memory and executive functions who are
invited to submit *posters* related to these topics.
