Report still not complete but a gap in the action, let me try to be useful
in this discussion (wish us all luck, its hard!).
First, when Paul raised the question of defintion of culture, I thought (and
still think) that a whole, huge, important topic was opened up and at a bad
time for me considering I care
a lot about it. My "ugh" probably should have been spelled "uhhhhhhhhhhh" in
the since of "oh no, now what to say/do, this could be endless! Yikes
terrible timing"). Not a negative grunt.
If misinterpreted mea culpa.
Second, there is nothing canonical about my ideas about culture and CHAT.
That was my effort, some dozen+ years ago, to find a way out of the
material/ideal dichotomy and finding, I
thought/think, a useful way to do it. Others disagree or simply mis the
point. Peter Jones disagress. All those who write sentences of the sort
"Cole says there are two kinds of artifiacts,
ideal and material" not only miss the point, they drive a stake into it and
destroy the impulse.
Finally, Geertz. I do not think it accurate to say that I was "using Geertz'
interpretive anth to establish coherenence/consistence to a set of partices,
activities, artifacts."
Here is what that draft passage said,
Geertz is often read as an anthropologist who adopts the conception of
culture as an inside-the-head-knowledge. While this is certainly an aspect
of Geertz's thinking that has become more dominant over time (Geertz, 199?),
I found it significant that Geertz explicitly rejects the strictly idealist
notion of culture in favor of a view that links up neatly with the notion of
artifact mediation,
*The "control mechanism" view of culture begins with the assumption that
human thought is basically both social and public -- that its natural
habitat is the house yard, the marketplace, and the town square. Thinking
consists not of "happenings in the head" (though happenings there and
elsewhere are necessary for it to occur) but of traffic in what have been
called, by G.H. Mead and others, significant symbols -- words for the most
part but also gestures, drawings, musical sounds, mechanical devices like
clocks... (1973, p. 45).*
I hope it is clear that there is a close affinity between this notion of
culture as control mechanism and the mediation of action through artifacts.

I believed at the time and believe today that there are several very useful
ideas in Geertz's 1973 work and that where it is
possible to find people of presumably different and perhaps antithetical
viewpoints (establishing difference/antithesis, etc is
important depending on what we want to do). This is NOT the same as using
"Geertz's interpretive anthropology" as a foundation, or a key justifying
text, etc.
I hope people will consider this discussion in light of Helene's very
important question about "culture of safety" at a work site.
Reconciling that kind of usage with the ideas currently under discussion
might be very productive.
