Maybe too late in the discussion and haven't read the other posts so you may
have already mentioned this, but... before I forget, have you read any of
David Middleton's articles? He treats memory as collective and not something
individual. His material is in English but we have an article which has been
translated into Portuguese.
If you need the references, please let me know.

Joao,
Gracias!! I've found a collection of selections from the book "Memoria
Colectiva" as well as some of Halbwachs journal essays in Spanish on the
internet. For me, anything in Spanish is more useful since my student(s)
don't read English well if at all. But this topic seems very relevant to a
lot of my other concerns although previously I had little knowledge of it so
I'm reading anything sent me.

Paul, I like a book of Maurice Halbwachs. In the Brasil, its title is
Memória Coletiva - Colective Memory. I dont know his books in english.
I like also to Jens Brockmeier - he make a articulation between memory and
narratives, i think that he can help you. I have the texts in atach.
I send too a article of James V. Wertsch - Narrative Tools of History and
Identity
happy 2008 and a great hug

Joao,
Thanks. Review articles are definitely very useful for getting the lay of
the land.
I've been suggesting to my student that he select one event (e.g., the
1982 massacre in the neighboring community), interview those alive who
experienced it, and interview the younger generation. I'm not sure if the
order of the interviews matters. I'm also planning to set up a viewing
of Kurosawa's "Rashomon" to keep him from jumping to conclusions :)

Assunto: [xmca] social memory
A general question for any bibliographic help .
I am advising a student preparing his bachillerato (5 year program)
thesis. He wants to study how memories of significant events (in this case
events during the period of political violence here during the 80s) are
transmitted between the generation that experienced them and the generation
following. He also would like to explore how this affects "identity" but I
have suggested that he simply focus on the transmission of the memories of
events that affected the entire group of community members with whom he's
working. I suspect that questions of identity (us/them) will emerge in the
process of exploring this process.
So, could anyone help me with some biblio references in this direction?
Thank you in advance.
Paul
