This isn't my area of research so I don't know much but I would recomend David Middleton.
One of his articles has been translated into Portuguese ("A Psicologia Social da Experiência - a relevância da memória") and can be found at "Proposições" - Revista Quadrimensal da Faculdade de Educação - Unicamp, vol. 17, n. 2 (50) - maio/ago. 2006, if anyone needs it. Paul, I like a book of Maurice Halbwachs. In the Brasil, its title is
Memória Coletiva - Colective Memory. I dont know his books in english.
I like also to Jens Brockmeier - he make a articulation between memory and
narratives, i think that he can help you. I have the texts in atach.
I send too a article of James V. Wertsch - Narrative Tools of History and
Identity
happy 2008 and a great hug

Joao,
Thanks. Review articles are definitely very useful for getting the lay of
the land.
I've been suggesting to my student that he select one event (e.g., the
1982 massacre in the neighboring community), interview those alive who
experienced it, and interview the younger generation. I'm not sure if the
order of the interviews matters. I'm also planning to set up a viewing
of Kurosawa's "Rashomon" to keep him from jumping to conclusions :)

Assunto: [xmca] social memory
A general question for any bibliographic help .
I am advising a student preparing his bachillerato (5 year program)
thesis. He wants to study how memories of significant events (in this case
events during the period of political violence here during the 80s) are
transmitted between the generation that experienced them and the generation
following. He also would like to explore how this affects "identity" but I
have suggested that he simply focus on the transmission of the memories of
events that affected the entire group of community members with whom he's
working. I suspect that questions of identity (us/them) will emerge in the
process of exploring this process.
So, could anyone help me with some biblio references in this direction?
Thank you in advance.
Paul
