Nacho-- Google tells me:
Vygotsky (1978, p56) provides the example of pointing a finger. Initially,
this behavior begins as a meaningless grasping motion; however, as people
react to the gesture, it becomes a movement that has meaning. In particular,
the pointing gesture represents an interpersonal connection between
individuals.
My reason for rasiing this issue on XMCA arose because of our local seminar
on mediational theories of mind in which the example occurs in a reading,
then we read Tomasello, and because in our textbook on development I have
followed the literature on pointing.
LSV appears wrong about the origins of pointing in "meaningly grasping
motion" (not his words, but close enough for discussion). Question. What
would a modern, more adequate,
Vygotskian analysis be??
