Thinking about Freire also brings to mind Boal. I had the wonderful
opportunity to take a workshop in with him, his son and wife earlier
this summer at the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed and I know the
Boal's have used TO to work with a variety of communities throughout the
world to develop understandings and alternative outcomes that empower
the participants. This might be another vehicle for your project.

Story telling is a big part of Beah's rescue. Indeed the book closes with a POWERFUL story. A wonderful example of double bind!
