The element of rhetorical norms is subsumed within the notion of genre which I clearly mentioned. We are a long way past Aristotle and Burke's new rhetorics were mentioned earlier in the thread. Critique is the unmasking of the functions of different rhetorics.
In an earlier post yrjo engestrom's idea of the zoped as "breaking out" was mentioned -- in the thread from almost a decade ago here on xmca that paper was discussed. Clearly learning can occur when persons are involved in some activity and whose relation to one another is not one of greater or lesser levels of skill/competence, transform the rules of the game, precisely when the bounds of the discussable are transgressed. In the music example, this might be Schoenberg choosing to use a chromatic scale -- unthinkable to earlier composers.
And the larger problem concerns the interlinking of all the different activity systems in a social whole. How does the distribution of wealth function. Is the "market" a tool? It would seem if anything, that questioning the role of the market in the organization of contemporary society is just one of those limits on the discussable, at least in the countries from which most xmca participants hail. Or private property of everything?? Rather than say tools as objects push back and have intelligence, why not just recognize that Earth (pacha mama as we say up here) as a whole is pushing back, which many believe to be the case.
What is creepy and frightening about the implications of the paper being discussed, especially as developed in Jay and Michael's extrapolations are the implications for the possibility of this kind of learning, the possibility of transgression. The implication that in this flat and boundless nether-space, there are no boundaries hence no possibilities of transgressioin. It is simply an ideological coverup of the existence of social booundaries increasingly deep with each passing technological innovation. Orwell and Huxley's dystopias merged in a the new velvet totalitarianism where noone can see the boot on their back, where the very idea that a boot is perpetually pushing them down is unthinkable.
Fortunately, there are other forces working in today's world that are providing great resistance, much more than ever thought possible.
