I have not participated in this discussion because I have simply not had
the time to do so properly, but ...

My understanding of the use of "space" in social theory is that it has been
mediated by use of the term in mathematics where it has a very definite
meaning, based on a metaphor with the three dimensions of space. Any field
(another spatial metaphor with a very definite meaning in mathematics)
defined by a number (n) of independent variables (dimensions) is "an
n-dimensional space." This idea allowed mathematicians to use methods
developed in spatial topics (eg even Euclidean geometry, vector analysis)
to be applied in topics bearing no apparent resemblance to space at all,
eg. optimising the parameters in an industrial process. Especially in the
1960s, when it became fashionable to write as opaquely as possible and
borrowing terminology from the "hard" sciences served this purpose well,
"space" started to be used to refer to social problems involving a number
of independent variables (class, ethnicity, gender, etc).

"Matter" is also used in the physical sciences in a different way from how
it is used in philosophy. In philosophy, "matter" is as opposed to "ideal",
but in physics "material" is as opposed to "wave", i.e., when a sounds
travels from A to B, there is no matter transmitted from A to B. Physicists
do not thereby imply of course, that sound is a "non-material" process.
