RE: [xmca] CHAT and action-research

I don't know an enormous amount about action research, but I do think that Argylis and Schon were very much inspired by Dewey and the idea of experiential learning. To the degree that CHAT was inspired by similar ideas I think there may be a good deal of sympathy between the two ideas. The idea that practitioners are involved in the research I think actually goes back to what I see as a difference between James and Dewey (and I'd be interested if others see this difference in other theories and ideas) - in other words radical empiricism and instrumental Pragmatism - where James felt that the scientist could be an outside observer to phenomena while Dewey saw the issue from a much more participatory perspective - making the argument that those actually engaged in the problem solving have a much better understanding of the relationship between Argylis and Schon at least seem to be working from the same perspective - at least from what I can see - that members of an organization have a better understanding of the problem solving than any outsiders, and therefore a better chance of changing themselves when researching how they actually do solve problems.
 
The differentiation they make between espoused theories and theories-in-use has a great deal in common I think with issues of rising to the concrete and praxis that I sometimes read on this list - the idea that it should be praxis that informs theory at the organizational level, rather than theory at the organizational level that informs praxis. I think they also really reflect some of the ideas of dialogicality that Joe was talking about a few weeks ago. But it also brings up I think some really interesting questions about zoped that people on this list were exploring. If you have a mentor in a zoped, is it a mentor who is looking to expand the neophyte in terms of espoused theory or is it a mentor that is looking to expand the neophyte in terms of theory in use?

I agree with Merja Helle about the varieties of action research and would
add to that
the variety of chat-inspired research.

With respect to Kevin's statement: Action research involves the
practitioner in researching
his/her/their own practices whether for ongoing improvement or for other
social action/change. The CHAT framework has certainly been applied by
folks studying other people's actions, not necessarily their own.

Perhaps "not necessarily their own" is correct, but there are certainly many
chat inspired works
that analyze the actions of the researchers as well as others. This is true
in work at LCHC routinely,
both the playworld research and the work involving the 5th Dimension.

Also, its been 20 years since the work cited in the Engestrom quotation. A
lot has changed in that time
methodologically.

Excellent topic. Collecting a set of examples could prove interesting.

Perhaps Merhe Helle can send along her paper for discussion when done.
