HI thanks for your interest in our work
To clarify further the goals of our Playworld study for Vera, Mary and
others --
The purpose of the study was not to look at cross cultural difference
in narrative development of children. We are familiar with the work on
cross-cultural differences in language socialization and narrative
development - indeed done in 80-ies see for example Heath, 1986.
The point of our work was to use a cultural narrative/story as a basis
for a adult child joint pretense, improvisation and arts/crafts. As
discussed by Bettelheim (1976), cultural narratives (e.g., folktales)
are powerful because they include developmentally appropriate
emotional conflicts and problems (e.g., separation problems, jealousy
toward siblings, anger toward authority/parents) which are further
accentuated by the hyperbolic contrasting of characters (e.g., good
vs. bad; brave vs. cowardly). The idea was that adults and children
"enter" the world of the story, experience it from "inside" and
l"live-through" the characters' emotions, dilemmas and problems,
rather than to achieve understandings though retelling and discussion.
We found that such an activity facilitates children's representational
activities, self expression and promotes literacy skills, in
particular narrative competence, as compareed to traditional classroom
literacy activity (such as story reading and discussion).
I hope this helps to better understand our work . I look forward to
provide more info on our work for people who are interested in
playworlds and play-pedagogy.
