I apologize for waiting so long for the reply but have been away from my
desk and as my life is currently no desk means no e-mail repsonses.

My interpretation is for the purpose of being able to analyze specific
movement of an individual's development. Group activity would be difficult
to analyze using utilizing a sign/tool distinction.

Interesting interpretation, Eric. But how could there by any distinction
between sign and tool in
a syncretic stage, more or less by definition.

What do people think of the examples? How do you interpret them if not in
the authors's terms?
