I was very saddened by the news of the death of Giyoo Hatano. I have
appreciated his kindly oblique critiques of my work and the breadth
of his own interests. One of my happiest memories of my one visit to
Japan is of being taken by Giyoo to see the cherry trees and irises
in bloom in a park in Tokyo before going to his lab to watch
videotapes of dialogic approaches to science teaching. Later he took
me to visit some important cultural monuments and ended up with an
excellent sashimi dinner at the fish market. I felt honored that he
gave up so much time to sharing with me some of the aspects of
Japanese life that he valued. I shall certainly miss him.
