Mike suggested cultural geographers:
Craig and Thrift, *Thinking space* London: Routledge, 2000 Holloway, Rice
and Valentine, 2003. Key concepts in geography. Sage. Massey and Jess
(1996). A place in the world?. Oxford u press mike

I would also suggest an article in a legal journal:
http://agora.stanford.edu/agora/volume4/mitchell.shtml
And Don Mitchell's book "On Public Space, Radical Politics and Marginalized
Peoples: The Right to the City: Social Justice and the Fight for Public
Space" (New York: Guilford, 2003).

I think in present times public's right to public resources are important to
address and defend. Henry Lefebvre advocated for 'the right to the city' as
public space for all. With gated communities, check points, passwords,
surveillances increasingly becoming part of our urban lanscape (something
that was for the nondemocratic socienties), art can offer a lot of
possibilities.
