Ethnographic Methodology in Literacy Research

Summer School 5-8 July 2004

Literacy Research Centre, Lancaster University, England

Qualitative research methods have been at the centre of the development =
of the field of Literacy Studies over the past twenty years. Researchers =
at Lancaster University have been at the forefront of developing these =
methodologies (as in Barton & Hamilton 1998; Barton, Hamilton & Ivanic =
2000; Ivanic 1998). In July 2004 we will be offering an Advanced Summer =
School focussing on these methodological developments.=20

Sessions will address the following topics:

=B7 Epistemological and ontological questions underlying our =
approach to ethnography.=20

=B7 Theories of literacy that guide our work and on the links =
between theory and methodology.=20

=B7 Carrying out research in educational and other settings of =
everyday life, including multilingual settings.=20

=B7 Ways of working collaboratively with learners and teachers =
and teacher-researcher projects.=20

=B7 Particular research methods, such as visual methods, =
discourse analysis and biographical methods.=20

=B7 Coding and data analysis, including using computers for =
qualitative data analysis.=20

=B7 Issues of representation: the politics and poetics of =
ethnography and ethnographic writing about literacy.=20

=B7 Ethical questions, on reflexivity in ethnographic research =
and on power relations in the field; working in sensitive settings.=20

=20

The summer school will be of interest to researchers and graduate =
students. It will provide an opportunity to meet people doing similar =
work from around the world and to develop networks of researchers. =
Contributors will include Yvon Appleby, David Barton, Mary Hamilton, =
Rachel Hodge, Roz Ivanic, Karin Tusting, Uta Papen, Anita Wilson.

Costs: =A3390 includes summer school fee, meals and accommodation. Full =
time students =A3315.

Lancaster is a historic city in the North West of England, one hour from =
Manchester Airport and an hour's drive from the heart of the Lake =
District.
