Hi everyone,
Please have a look at the following post-doctoral position here in
Seattle. I think it's quite an interesting opportunity for people with
a CHAT focus, since it involves extended (3 year) ethnographic work
focussed on people's learning and development. I'll be looking directly
at intersections of cognition, identity and social-organizational life
in this project.
If you are interested, please contact me DIRECTLY BY EMAIL FIRST and
we'll have you get me materials electronically since I will be hiring
soon.
Please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested. Thanks.
Reed Stevens
POSITION AVAILABLE
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCHOLAR
100% FTE
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, SEATTLE
Note: This position starts late Spring/early Summer 2003.
The College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle is
seeking a postdoctoral scholar with experience in field-based or
ethnographic research to participate in a multi-year research project
funded by the National Science Foundation. The newly funded Center for
the Advancement of Engineering Education is an NSF Center for Learning
and Teaching. The Center spans four universities. One core element of
the Center’s mission is to conduct research on how engineers learn and
develop disciplinary identities in the context of their educations. We
are therefore conducting longitudinal studies following students across
their first three years of education and for two years across the
boundary from education to work.
Scholars from various disciplines in which field methods are prominent
are encouraged to apply including—the learning sciences, cultural
psychology, science and technology studies, qualitative sociology, and
cultural anthropology.
Essential function: This postdoctoral scholar would participate in
research activities assisting and collaborating with co-Principal
Investigator Reed Stevens and in collaboration with post-doctoral
scholars at the other Center universities (Stanford, Howard, Colorado
School of Mines and the University of Minnesota.) The postdoctoral
scholar would be responsible for collecting, organizing and
interpreting data and literature, and carrying out related research and
administrative tasks as needed.
Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D. is required. The ideal candidate
will be flexible, dependable, and meticulous, with excellent oral and
written communication skills. Organizational skills are essential.
Must be able to work as a collaborative, cooperative, and congenial
member of a close knit scholarly and administrative team, as well as
work independently. Excellent interpersonal skills and in particular
the demonstrable ability to build rapport with college aged students is
needed. Enthusiasm for a purposive, collegial, and non-linear
organizational culture is essential. The ideal candidate would have a
strong interest in how people learn (broadly understood) and in
qualitative methods for studying people and communities.
Desirable qualifications: Research experience studying or
participation in a technical field (e.g. engineering, medicine,
science, etc.) would be an advantage.
Salary: Competitive with assistant professor positions in many
disciplines.
How to apply: Please submit a) a brief letter of interest, b) a CV, c)
a single writing sample most appropriate to the described position, and
d) names and contact information for 3 references. Applications will
be reviewed until the position is filled.
