Teachers (currently unpaid, huge turnover, justified complaints): $75 per
night, x 12 = $900.
Books ($30 each -- special pre-apprenticeship math books) -- $300-$600 per
class (depends on when in attrition curve they are given to students)
Overhead for church, Interfaith Committee, maybe buy a blackboard;
photocopying: $500 max

Yes. Right now NONE of these costs are being paid -- teachers volunteer,
students don't have books or scratch paper, there is no blackboard (one site
has a flip chart). Makes you wonder if what they are learning is actually
math!

Regarding closer study: I hope to sit in on a whole cycle of classes next
time around. But my immediate plan is to interview the recent graduates and
track them as they apply to apprenticeship progams. That transition is of
great interest.

We ARE trying to scare up funding. Did I mention that the Fry foundation
(Frye?) turned us down because our placement rate was too low? We gave them
the figures for people who showed up the first night (really more a measure of
how serious unemployment or under-employment is in these communities) against
the number that are in the pipeline to get into apprenticeship progams, which
does show a lot of fall-off.
