Thank you for your messages and particularly
for the poem from Auden.
It reminded me of another I wrote a paper
on freshman year in college. Right now
I can't remember the author (Sassoon??)
or the name, just parts of the last
lines which said something like
don't ever dare to tell again...
"to children hungry
for some desperate glory
the old lie "dulce et
decorum est pro patria mori"
We do have a new world going.
We have not yet grasped its
potentialities (for life or for
destruction) but our tools are old
tools and our responses are old
responses.
This is a situation where prolepsis,
may work against us.
