There is a very interesting story in the New York Times today about literacy
policies in Azerbaijan. There have been some good/depressing stories of
Stalin's language/literacy strategies to disempower the states at the
periphery of the Russian/SSSR empire, but in this story you get a new
twist with a new generation, new alliances, different sources of money,
etc. The key line for me: the succession of changes has "caused amnesia of
the nation."
It is reachable for free from anyone who can reach the net at www.nytimes.com.
When you find a search engine, look for "Soviet ties". You need to login and
become a member, but you do not need money to do so.....yet.
----Tomorrow is "labor day" in the U.S. Another story in the Times I found interesting is that approval of labor unions has increased dramatically in the past year or so owing to the overall economic circumstances. It might be of interest to Americans and non=Americans alike for different reasons. It was preceeded in my morning experience by a story on public radio saying that American workers work the most hours per year among workers in all other industrial countires. mike
