UCSD is located in La Jolla, walking distance to the ocean. As with all UC Campuses, research, teaching and service are expected of all
faculty. UCSD is research-intensive, consistently ranking in the top 5 of US Universities in raising external research funds. The campus
has a medical school and runs extensive clinical research; it includes Scripps Institute of Oceanography, a premier site for oceanographic
research, and the Salk Institute, known for cutting-edge biomedical work. And while UCSD is strong in science and engineering,
humanities and social science programs are also excellent. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged through programs, speakers' series, and
collaborations, including those between the ten UC Campuses. San Diego is a growing city of about 1.5 million, near the Mexican
border, with an increasingly large growth in high tech and biotechnology firms. It boasts the world's second best climate and affords many
cultural and outdoor attractions. Housing is expensive (but there are campus programs to help and interest rates are still good), heating is
cheap, food is moderate, and sunsets are spectacular.
The Chair carries a research stipend. Salaries are in strict accordance with UC pay scales. If non-citizen, state immigration status. UCSD
