Welcome to the XMCA@weber.ucsd.edu, and thanks for taking the
trouble to describe your interests to the benefit of your
co-participants.

XMCA is the current incarnation of a family of electronic discussion
lists hosted at the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition (LCHC)
at the University of California, San Diego since 1984.

XMCA is an e-mail-mediated discussion forum (a mailing list) for
a network of interdisciplinary scholars who share an interest in
the study of human mind developing in its cultural and historical
contexts. The emphasis of the list is on research that seeks to
resolve methodological problems associated with the analysis of
approaches that place culture and activity at the center of attempts
to understand human nature. The discussion participants hail from
a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, cognitive science,
education, linguistics, psychology, sociology and informatics.

Web information about the LCHC can be found at:

        http://communication.ucsd.edu/LCHC/index.html

XMCA was organized in its present form in 1995, and given its name
as a sign of its close links to the journal MCA -- "Mind, Culture,
and Activity" -- which was launched at the same time. As an intermediary
between the MCA journal and the XMCA electronic forum, an MCA
Website has been developed at:

        http://communication.ucsd.edu/MCA/index.html

The intention is to re-center discourse in a manner that allows
maximum interaction with more traditional print media, and provides
a space for making clear the international and interdisciplinary
nature of the forum. The Website currently includes a library of
papers put up for accessibility to XMCA discussions; many of them
are in draft versions. There is also a section providing access to
the archive of XMCA discussions, with daily updates.

The messaging practices that have developed on the XMCA and its
predecessors over the years are varied and flexible, supporting
open discussions between a diversity of participants. A general
norm for the system is that messages are informal communications,
what has traditionally been referred to as "half baked" messages,
which, it is hoped, will be baked up into fine food for thought as
a consequence of the interactions that occur subsequently. From
time to time, xlist messages appear in articles or books, with some
form of acknowledgement of their source. The norm in this case, as
in daily use of the system is to be considerate of one's colleagues.

We trust each participant to know how to handle their own mailing
system. However, weird things still happen in networks coordinating
messages from as many and as heterogeneous systems as a listserver.
Please try to avoid being the cause of such events as looping and
other mailer daemons. Maintain good relations to your Postmaster
and/or SysOp. Be forgiving of others who have the misfortune of
being the source of mailing blunders or server malfunctions. Rest
assured these problems are getting scarcer. And stay calm: the
xfamily at weber.ucsd will take care of the situation as soon as
they can.

To unsubscribe from XMCA send an e-mail to xmca-request@weber.ucsd.edu,
with the single word, unsubscribe, in the BODY of the message and
nothing in the SUBJECT line. You will receive an automatic confirmation
that you have been taken off the list.

The XMCA area of the MCA Website will be a good place for retrieving
technical and background information about the list. Please bookmark
http://communication.ucsd.edu/MCA/Mail/Discussion_archive.html

If you have any questions or problems, please write to us at
xfamily@weber.ucsd.edu -- we would be especially interested to hear
from those of you who do not have Web access.

Thanks for joining the list. We hope you enjoy the discussion.
