I agree that naming things or "focusing on them" can be both good news and
bad news in terms of usefulness or purpose. For me the problem is that
people are unaware of how the cultural naming of experience constructs a
network of meaning that only represents a part of the totality of the
experience. We both gain and lose and have to be on guard against reducing
experience (or the person) to the category or label that has been created to
talk about certain salient behavior features by folks who need to talk to
each other about these types with some kind of language.
